It is a Hindu ritual that is held to honor a person’s 60th birthday. It is close to the sliver-wedding anniversary from a Western perspective. According to Hindu culture, the age of sixty is significant because it is seen as a watershed moment in a man’s life, as he has generally completed his obligations to family and home and may now devote his thoughts to spirituality. We may argue that his worldly ambitions characterized his life before he was sixty, and his quest for spiritualism defined his life after that. To commemorate this significant event in a person’s life, complex and meaningful ceremonies have been implemented. Some wedding rituals are carried out.
Sashtiapthapoorthi (60th Birthday Pooja) is arranged by family members when the male enters his 61st year after successfully completing 60 years. It is celebrated by gathering together and doing Homams, Abhisheka, and Mangalyadharana for the couple to get the Lord’s blessings. This age is significant because it marks the completion of one’s commitments to one’s home, family, and society, allowing one to focus on spiritual growth.
Sashtiapthapoorthi is also known as Ayul Shanthi Homam, and it helps the couple’s health and longevity. It offers the pair a spiritual lift as they near the completion of their paternal responsibilities.
The ceremony was witnessed by the couple’s relatives and friends who gathered in a function hall or temple, or even at their house. It begins with a family deity pooja, followed by nine homams, including Ganapathy, Lakshmi, Amurtha Mrityunjeyar, Ayush, Danvantri, and Kalasabhisheka, after which the couple binds the knot once again, depending on the family tradition.
