There are a lot of death rituals in Hinduism, with the exact process depending on the person’s caste and sect. One well-known example is cremation followed by the disposal of ashes in a sacred river. The 7 sacraments of the Church take place at various stages during a person’s life. One of these is the Sacrament of the Holy Anointing (Rite for Extreme Unction) which takes place, possibly after a period of illness, when one feels close to death.
When death is inevitable, relatives and a priest are called to the dying person’s bedside. Preparations for cremation can begin as soon as the person dies. Mantras, sacred texts, and ceremonial gifts are prepared before their body is moved to the cremation grounds. The eldest son of the deceased and officiating priest usually performs the final cremation rites. For 10 days after the death of their loved one, family members are considered contaminated and need to go through special purification rituals. During this time the soul of the dead person has a chance to find a new spiritual body in order to commence its journey toward the next life. Ceremonies include offering milk and water and rice-ball offerings. On a certain day, ashes are collected and the rites of Shraddha are done by those who have lost loved ones. The means of performing these rites is to wash their souls in faith or knowledge. These rites have to be performed during a specific period time for the deceased to find peace.
