In Tamil tradition, the puberty ritual symbolizes the feminine spirit and generative power of women. Because of its holy and hazardous nature, it is thought that it has to be managed. When a girl begins to menstruate, she is deemed mature and gains a higher social standing, but she is also seen as more susceptible to impurity.
A girl who does not menstruate is not believed to have attained “complete” womanhood, despite the fact that a boy’s passage into manhood is deemed natural. As a result, the ritual honors the maturation of a young girl into a woman suitable for marriage and, eventually, childbirth.
